Coding Techniques for Reliable Bots
Learning objectiveStructure strategy code so it can be tested and debugged.
Understand the idea
A procedural bot can use a pure choose(observation) function. An object-oriented bot can keep configuration and local observations in a Strategy class. Modular design separates input validation, feature extraction, decision rules, and output formatting. A state machine can distinguish preflop, flop, turn, river, and showdown; never carry one hand's transient state into the next by accident.
Validate every external field. Catch parsing errors at the input boundary and log to stderr without tokens or opponents' hidden information. If local memory matters, key it by table, hand, and opponent; save only what your program is allowed to observe. Use deterministic fixtures and a fixed random seed when testing stochastic rules.
At the poker table
A hand-specific memory entry might store that seat 2 raised preflop in table X, hand 41. Clear it when hand.number changes; aggregate long-term tendencies separately by opponent identity.
Code and decision sketch
Python-style pseudocodedef choose(observation):
state = validate(observation)
features = summarize(state)
return decide(features, state['legal'])
# Test each function with saved, redacted observations.Common mistake
A giant loop that mixes network calls, feature extraction, and bets is hard to test and can duplicate an action after a retry.
Try it yourself
Separate a current decision function into parse, validate, choose, and format steps. Write one test for each.
